The Information Revolution
by Paul Zurbo Brown, Bairnsdale College, 2005
Many social thinkers believe that we are moving from the Industrial-mechanistic Age to the Age of Information and an economy based on information and finding new hi-tech. ways of achieving our goals.
The development of the computer in the 70's and the microchip changed the way that we organised the workplace and managed our business. Improvements in the operation and efficiency of computer technology and what we can do has revolutionised not just industry but also the way we connect as a society. Personal computers became smaller and cheaper in the 80's and we are now moving mobile phone technology. The internet linked the world in a split second enabling instantaneous communication anywhere in the world at any time. The mind boggles with the pace of development in less than 100 years when the wireless was first discovered.
So how do we connect this communication revolution with how our society functions. Firstly it changes the boundaries of what is possible and the goals that we set as individuals and as a society. We are no longer constrained by time and space. We are able to communicate anywhere and everywhere which has affected our sense of personal space and management of our social lives. Young people are able to exist within their choice of friends without being physically together through mobiles and text messaging.
