Technical Tips

mediaDownload this Podcast and Vodcast planning sheet to organise your recording activity.

Audio Files. Save any audio that you want to upload to this site in the MP3 format. If you don't already have software that will create mp3 files we suggest Audacity. It is available at no cost for Windows and Macintosh computers, from http://audacity.sourceforge.net. Keep your podcast to a maximum of 5 minutes, with a maximum file size of 4MB.

Video Files: Video should be saved in the MP4 or FLV formats. Your video editing software may be able to do this for you, or you can use MPEG Streamclip, available at no cost for Windows and Macintosh computers, from http://www.squared5.com. Another option is to use an online video conversion tool, such as http://www.zamzar.com.  Video files should be under 20MB, and should be no wider than 640 pixels.

Photos and Artwork: Images for display on the site should be no wider than 800 pixels, and saved in JPG, GIF, or PNG formats. When images are uploaded to the site a thumbnail image will be automatically created, so you don't need to do this. Save your images at 72 DPI, and keep the file size less than 250KB.  If you don't have an image editor on your computer, try GIMP, available for Windows computers at http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net, and for Macintosh computers at http://gimp.lisanet.de. Photos generally look better as JPG or PNG files, while line art (such as drawings and cartoons) use much less file space if they are saved as GIFs.

Other Files: You can upload files as PDF, TXT, and Word documents (DOC format - not DOCX). Collections of files can also be uploaded as a ZIP file.

Uploading files: Your teacher will be able to log in and upload files for you. Teachers are able to obtain login details by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
