About to begin teaching VCE Sociology?

Here are some suggestions to help get you started.q1

Textbooks

sev.asn.au/textbooks

We recommend securing yourself (at minimum) a copy of the relevant textbook, which we produce in collaboration with experienced teachers of the study.

Our texts include:

  • detailed explorations of the relevant content structured according to key knowledge points
  • advice and scaffolding for developing students’ key skills
  • relevant case studies and deep-dive content
  • activities and suggestions for consolidating student learning (including revision)
  • further reading and resource suggestions
  • instructions for accessing supplementary materials published online.

We’re always keen for feedback and queries when it comes to our textbooks (these are enormously helpful in letting us know where we might have gaps that need filling via online supplements).

During sales season (October–March) it’s best to source yours from your preferred textbook supplier rather than ordering a single copy directly from us.

Sample pages (generally corresponding to AoS1.1 or AoS3.1) are also available via the link above.

If you need immediate access to the whole text, you might like to purchase a bundle which includes the eBook version from one of the four suppliers noted at the bottom of the page.

Facebook group

Teachers of VCE Sociology

VCE Sociology Teachers Discussion Group

These groups are generally the best way to broadcast messages and queries directly to other teachers of the subject, including (but not limited to):

  • asking for advice about how others are approaching thorny issues in the classroom, course planning, certain concepts and/or case studies
  • free-flowing discussions about anything interesting and relevant to teaching the course
  • callouts for collaborators, mentoring, trial exam marking and cross-marking assistance.

Newsletter

Subscribe here

Our newsletter is, as you would expect, the best way to get updates from us on what’s happening in VCE Sociology world. This includes professional learning events and resource releases from us and our partners.

Professional learning events

We deliver a range of in-person and online learning events for teachers throughout the year, including welcome workshops, conferences, seminars and open forum discussions. Teachers from SEV member schools receive a significant blanket discount on all of our paid events. Information about registering and programming for all of our events is released via our newsletter, and published on our website under the ‘Events’ tab.

Member resources

If your school is a member, you should have access to the Member resources page on our website. We’re still fairly early in the life of the re-accredited study design, so it’s looking a little bare at the moment, but we’ll let you know via the newsletter when we have new resources being added.

If you know your school is a member but you don’t have access to the Member resources page, get in touch with your school’s group administrator and ask them to add you (by selecting Membership -> Teachers associated with this membership -> New).

VCAA

Study design and support materials for VCE Sociology

Teachers should always ensure they are across the various resources and advice produced by the VCAA to support teachers with delivering the course. Our VCE Sociology curriculum manager is also a great person to get in touch with if you need help understanding the requirements of the course.

Paid resources

We usually have a range of resources available for teachers getting started in the subject via our paid resources library, all of which are available at a significant discount for SEV members. These are typically recordings, slides and other presenter resources from our best and most recent professional learning events.
